Family members of the late Reona Payne have told the Guyana Guardian yesterday evening that her funeral is scheduled to be held this Thursday at Haslington on the East Coast of Demerara.

It is understood that the main proceedings will be held at the Full Gospel Fellowship Church in the same village.

Attendance numbers are expected to be high, especially among women from the East Coast district who knows the Payne family and have repeatedly expressed their dismay at the way in which Reona died.

The 32-year-old mother of three was murdered allegedly at the hands of her then live-in partner, former army captain Orwain Sandy, two Saturdays ago at First Street, Alexander Village.

He is alleged to have pumped at least 14 bullets into her body after the couple had an argument over infidelity among other issues.

Mr. Sandy had accused Payne of having extramarital relationships which he had allegedly asked her to end.

Some sources have claimed that during the argument in the couple’s car, Ms. Payne had made an attempt to escape from Sandy, supposedly after realizing that their argument would have turned violent.

However, it is said that she did not get anywhere more than a few feet, and at which point Sandy allegedly shot and killed her.

Her lifeless body was left lying on the roadside, while Sandy drove his car to a nearby police station where he turned himself and the alleged murder weapon over to police.

Investigators subsequently visited the scene and retrieve Ms. Payne’s body along with other pieces of evidence, after cordoning off and combing the crime scene.

Almost six days after giving himself up, the interdicted soldier was charged with her murder, and appeared before Principal Magistrate Judy Latchman, who consented to a psychiatric examination application that was made by the man’s attorney, James Bond,

Though the matter will be called again on the 24 April, it is understood that any possibility of proceeding with a trial, will have to determine until after the psychiatric report is received.
