The General Directorate of Traffic's (DGT) highest-earning speed camera is located at kilometer point 20.2 on the M-40 near Mercamadrid and within the city limits of Madrid, where 118,149 fines were issued last year, averaging one every four and a half minutes.

As stated in a document from the DGT on the 50 fixed and stretch radars that are least respected, with a historical series that begins in 2017.

The document, analyzed by Servimedia, indicates that Andalucía was the autonomous community with the most speed cameras on the list last year (16), ahead of the Comunidad Valenciana (7); the Comunidad de Madrid and Galicia (5); Cantabria and Castilla-La Mancha (4); Canarias, Extremadura, and Castilla y León (2), and Asturias, Baleares, and Navarra (1)

The most hefty fine radar was placed at kilometer point 20.2 on the M-40, where the speed limit is 80 km/h on a road that is mostly limited to 100 km/h.

It imposes twice as many fines as the second

The speed camera issued 118,149 fines during the past year, nearly double the number of the next most active radar, located at kilometer point 968.2 on the A-7 in Malaga (66,869 fines).

The third highest was the one at point 127.6 on the A-15 in Navarra (49,677 penalties), ahead of another one located on the A-7 in Malaga, this time at kilometer point 978.9 (45,522 penalties)

Three of the 10 most active speed cameras last year were also in the 'top ten' for 2022, located at kilometer point 127.6 on the A-15 in Navarra (third in 2023 and fifth in 2022); kilometer point 9.2 on the A-55 in Pontevedra (fifth and eighth, respectively), and kilometer point 37.3 on the A-381 in Cádiz (ninth and second).

The fixed or section radar with the most activity has been changing every year. So, in 2017 it was the one installed at kilometer point 76 on the A-44 in Jaén (61,573 fines). In 2018, the top spot was taken by the one located at kilometer point 246 on the A-7 in Málaga (54,377 fines). And in 2019, the radar at kilometer point 478 on the AP-7 in Valencia took the lead (59,443 fines).

The outbreak of the Covid pandemic brought the checkpoint at kilometer point 246 of the A-7 in Malaga back to the top in 2020 (48,771 fines), while the one at kilometer point 478 of the AP-7 in Valencia once again led the chart in 2021 (60,525 fines). In 2022, the top spot was taken by the checkpoint at kilometer point 75 of the A-381 in Cadiz (79,258 fines).

Therefore, the aforementioned M-40 radar issued more speeding tickets last year than any other, at least since 2017, with a significantly higher number of detected infractions compared to other speed cameras in previous years.
